Grade K-1 Term 4 Seasonal Topic Ladybugs Weather and Birds: - This term we completed 3 week long adventure cycles to emphasize cooperation (put ups/put downs, hidden agendas, active listening, mixing and perspective taking). Students practice this through the norms of “Be Kind”, “Be Gentle”, “Be Safe”. We investigated spring changes in the Adventure Field and and directly observed life cycle changes by catching ladybugs and their food source (aphids) from spiny thistle plants. Students also learned about ways humans can help support life cycles by observing the sunflower patches they planted in the fall, anticipating when the flowers will turn to seed and by transferring ladybugs from the habitat rich Adventure Field to release in our schoolyard gardens. We structured our learning with 5 lab stations: Explore, Create, Imagine, Engineer and Research. Students got to choose which of the 5 labs to investigate and learned different skills in each one. For example, students continued to develop listening, acting and story-telling skills through the learning protocol “Story Telling Story Acting” by Dr. Vivian Paley.

This term we completed 3 winter adventure cycles. We experimented with taking challenges through healthy risks like performing the haka Whai Ake Te Matauranga (Pursue Knowledge) and 2nd graders continued practicing Tane Mahuta and 3rd graders began learning Eko Te Tui (The Tui Bird Sings). The kapa haka practices for this age group were designed to emphasize creating a community, cooperation, communication and conflict resolution. We worked on highlighting making mistakes, empathy, trustworthiness, risk taking, physical vs emotional trust. Students know this behavior as “Being Kind”, “Being Gentle” and “Being Safe” (2nd Grade) and “Play Hard”, “Play Fair” and “Play Safe” (3rd Grade).
Fall: This term our adventure case study was titled “Seeds and Soil” we had 3 week long “Adventures” to emphasize cooperation (put ups/put downs, hidden agendas, active listening, mixing and perspective taking). Students practice this through the norms of “Be Kind”, “Be Gentle”, “Be Safe”. We investigated how rocks break down and mix with organic material to make soil and also how seeds look different and how they move around in the fall to be planted by natural forces in the winter. Our final project was participating in story telling/story acting about seeds and the adventures we take to find them where they go.
This term we completed 3 late summer adventures cycles to emphasize respecting self and others, working together, and safety. Students know this as “Be Kind”, “Be Gentle”, “Be Safe”. We also investigated non-living parts of the environment like how rocks turn into soil. We categorized and described rocks in 3 different ways (size, color of minerals and shape) and made a rock museum.
