Grade K-1 Term 4 Seasonal Topic Ladybugs Weather and Birds: - This term we completed 3 week long adventure cycles to emphasize cooperation (put ups/put downs, hidden agendas, active listening, mixing and perspective taking). Students practice this through the norms of “Be Kind”, “Be Gentle”, “Be Safe”. We investigated spring changes in the Adventure Field and and directly observed life cycle changes by catching ladybugs and their food source (aphids) from spiny thistle plants. Students also learned about ways humans can help support life cycles by observing the sunflower patches they planted in the fall, anticipating when the flowers will turn to seed and by transferring ladybugs from the habitat rich Adventure Field to release in our schoolyard gardens. We structured our learning with 5 lab stations: Explore, Create, Imagine, Engineer and Research. Students got to choose which of the 5 labs to investigate and learned different skills in each one. For example, students continued to develop listening, acting and story-telling skills through the learning protocol “Story Telling Story Acting” by Dr. Vivian Paley.
